Analysis: Retroid Pocket 6 launch hits another stumbling block after shipping delayed

Retroid Pocket 6 Delays: OLED Screen Production Affects Early Shipments

Retroid Pocket 6 Delays: A Hurdle in the Android Gaming Handheld Market

The much-anticipated Retroid Pocket 6, a portable Android gaming device, has faced another setback in its launch process due to a production slowdown related to its OLED screen.

Limited Early Shipments

In a recent update to its customers, Retroid announced that only around 100 black units of the Pocket 6 will be shipped next Monday, starting with the stick-on-top version. This is a result of the OLED screen calibration issues, which have constrained the number of units that can be produced during the initial production phase.

Production Ramp-up and Timeline

Retroid expects to overcome this issue by bringing in new calibration equipment, which should increase screen production capacity by around 10 times starting from Tuesday. However, there won't be any shipments on Tuesday due to the switch, and broader shipments are expected to start on Wednesday.

Color Prioritization and Future Plans

Initially, black models are being prioritized, covering both stick-on-top and D-pad-on-top layouts. This approach helps keep the production line moving and avoids constant changeovers, with plans to build two colors at the same time once things stabilize.

Implications for the North East Region and India

The Retroid Pocket 6's delays may impact early adopters in the North East region and across India, as they wait for their devices. However, this temporary setback also underscores the growing interest in Android gaming handhelds and the potential for local manufacturers to tap into this market.

Looking Forward

As Retroid works to address the production challenges and get the Pocket 6 into the hands of its customers, it's a reminder for consumers to consider factors like screen quality, processing power, ergonomics, and software usability when choosing an Android gaming handheld.
