A Familiar Name in Android's Landscape Bids Farewell: Nova Launcher
In the dynamic world of Android, few names resonate as much as Nova Launcher. Since its inception, it has been a favorite among users seeking a customizable and efficient Android launcher experience. However, in September 2025, the sole developer behind this iconic app stepped away, leaving many to wonder about its future.
A New Swedish Owner Steps In
Fast forward to July 2022, when analytics firm Branch acquired Nova Launcher. Although the acquisition brought some initial excitement, development slowed significantly, and eventually, everyone involved in the launcher's development was laid off, except its founder, Barry.
Fast forward again to a few months later, and Barry announced his exit, leaving Nova Launcher's future uncertain. However, a Swedish company, Instabridge, stepped in to save the day. Instabridge, known for building products that help people get online, acquired Nova Launcher with the intention of maintaining its legacy.
A Maintenance-First Approach
Instabridge's immediate focus is to keep Nova in a working state and actively maintained, ensuring it works on modern Android releases. While they are not promising a revamp, they will take a maintenance-first approach, fixing reported bugs and making future changes with performance and customization in mind.
Ads and Pricing Changes on the Horizon?
Despite Instabridge's reassurances about keeping Nova's legacy alive, there are signs pointing towards ads and pricing changes. Instabridge is exploring a sustainable business model to support Nova's development, which could lead to ads appearing in the free version and higher pricing tiers for the launcher.
Nova Prime, the paid version, will remain ad-free, with Instabridge reducing its price to $3.99 after the acquisition. However, there's no guarantee that it will receive new features in the future.
A Cautious Look Ahead for Nova Launcher Users
For long-term Nova Launcher users in the North East region and across India, the good news is that at least the app won't shut down. However, that may eventually come at a cost, either in the form of ads or a higher-priced Ultra tier.
As Instabridge navigates Nova Launcher's future, it's essential for users to stay informed and make informed decisions about their usage.
