Justice for Anjel Chakma: Northeast Students Demand Action Against Racial Attacks

Students from the Northeastern region of India recently staged a protest in New Delhi, demanding justice for Tripura student Anjel Chakma, who was killed in Dehradun following a racially-motivated attack. This tragic event has once again highlighted the persistent discrimination and prejudice faced by people from the Northeast in some parts of the country.

The Tragic Incident and Its Aftermath

Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura, was attacked by a group of six individuals in Dehradun on 9th December. He was stabbed after objecting to racial slurs hurled at him and his younger brother. Chakma succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on 26th December. Dehradun police have arrested five of the six accused, but one, Yagyaraj Awasthi, a resident of Nepal, is still at large.

The Demand for Justice and Protection

Hundreds of students from the Northeast, including those studying in Delhi University, participated in a protest organized by the Northeast Students Society of Delhi University (NESSDU) demanding a thorough investigation into Chakma's killing. The NESSDU president, Pointing Thokchom, called for the case to be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and for the family to be compensated appropriately. Bipul Chakma, vice-president of the All India Chakma Students Union, alleged that the Uttarakhand administration delayed the investigation, prompting the students to gather at Jantar Mantar demanding justice.

The Broader Implications for the Northeast and India

The tragic death of Anjel Chakma is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by students from the Northeast in parts of mainland India. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has condemned the murder, stating that it reflects the persistent discrimination and prejudice faced by people from the Northeast. He urged for an end to this vicious cycle of racial abuse and attacks against Northeast students.

A Call for Change and Action

The demand for justice and protection for students from the Northeast is not a new issue. It is a reminder that discrimination and racial prejudice have no place in our Constitution and that the rule of law must prevail to ensure justice. As we move forward, it is crucial that we address these issues head-on and work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
