RIMS Tree Plantation Drive: A Step Towards Sustainability in North East India
In an effort to promote environmental sustainability and combat climate change, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, organized a Tree Plantation Drive on December 31, 2025. This initiative was part of the Swachhta Action Plan (SAP) and was coordinated with the Atal Smriti Varsh 2025 Committee, BJP Manipur Pradesh.
RIMS's Green Initiatives
For over two decades, RIMS has been committed to maintaining a plastic-free campus and developing green zones. In response to the increasing incidence of floods and the global climate crisis, the institute continues to promote tree plantation, plastic-free practices, and public awareness. The tree plantation drive held on December 31 was a testament to this ongoing commitment.
A Tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee
The tree plantation programme was held on the occasion of the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who inaugurated the Jubilee Hall at RIMS. The event was a tribute to Vajpayee's vision of a green and sustainable environment. The year-long centenary celebrations of Vajpayee concluded with this tree plantation drive, which was organized under the Prime Minister's Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative.
Participation and Collaboration
The event was attended by officials, faculty members, members of BJP Manipur Pradesh, staff, students, and personnel from CRED and MSS. The presence of dignitaries such as Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS, Imphal; Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, President, BJP, Manipur Pradesh; and K. Saratkumar Singh, General Secretary and Convenor, Atal Smriti Varsh 2025 Committee, BJP Manipur Pradesh, underscored the importance of the initiative.
Implications for North East India and Beyond
The tree plantation drive by RIMS in Imphal is a significant step towards environmental sustainability in North East India. As the region grapples with the effects of climate change, such initiatives are crucial in mitigating the impacts and promoting a greener, healthier environment. Furthermore, the drive aligns with the national Swachhta Action Plan, demonstrating RIMS's commitment to the broader Indian context.
Looking Forward
The tree plantation drive serves as a reminder of the need for collective action in addressing environmental issues. As we move forward, it is essential that institutions, communities, and individuals continue to work together to promote sustainable practices and protect our environment. The legacy of leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who championed environmental conservation, should inspire us to take similar steps towards a greener, more sustainable future.
