Modern Rail Travel for Northeast India: The Silchar Agartala Express Upgrade

The New Year 2026 brought a significant development for rail passengers in Assam's Barak Valley. The Silchar Agartala Silchar Express (Train Nos. 15664/15663) has been upgraded to modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches, enhancing passenger safety, comfort, and amenities.

Enhanced Passenger Experience

The transition from conventional ICF coaches to LHB rakes has been formally flagged off at Silchar Railway Station, marking the beginning of a more comfortable journey for passengers. The upgraded service, starting from Wednesday, is expected to significantly improve the travel experience for those using the Silchar Agartala Express.

Safety and Comfort

Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha, who was present at the flagging off ceremony, described the development as a hopeful beginning to the New Year. He highlighted that the conversion to LHB coaches would boost passenger safety and comfort.

Future Railway Projects

MP Purkayastha also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for addressing long-standing concerns regarding ageing rolling stock. He mentioned that the Rangiya Silchar Express is scheduled for LHB conversion next month, following the recent upgrade of the Silchar Kanchanjungha Express.

In addition, Purkayastha revealed that efforts are underway to introduce Vande Bharat services to Silchar, although space constraints at the existing station pose a challenge. He added that alternative locations, such as the Netaji Nagar area, are being explored for a new station, considering future railway projects like the proposed Lanka Moinarbond line.

Implications for Northeast India and Beyond

The upgraded Silchar Agartala Express is a step towards modernizing railway infrastructure in Northeast India, a region known for its geographical challenges and limited connectivity. This upgrade can serve as a model for future improvements, ensuring safer and more comfortable travel for passengers in the region.

Furthermore, the proposed introduction of Vande Bharat services and the exploration of new station locations demonstrate the government's commitment to improving rail connectivity in the Northeast, which can boost economic growth and regional integration.

Reflections and Looking Forward

Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya welcomed the upgrade, expressing confidence that further railway infrastructure improvements would follow for southern Assam. As these developments unfold, it is essential for passengers to contribute to maintaining the upgraded facilities for a more enjoyable and sustainable travel experience.

The modernization of the Silchar Agartala Express is a positive step towards enhancing rail travel in Northeast India. As the region continues to evolve and grow, it is crucial to invest in infrastructure that caters to the needs of its diverse population and supports the region's economic and social development.
