Justice for Tripura Student: Northeast Students Protest in Delhi

Northeast Students Demand Justice for Tripura Student's Death in Dehradun

In a shocking incident that has stirred the hearts of students from the Northeast, a Tripura student named Anjel Chakma lost his life following a brutal attack in Dehradun. This tragic event has prompted a wave of protests by students from the region in Delhi, demanding justice and an end to racial abuse.

Protest at Jantar Mantar

Hundreds of students from the Northeast, under the banner of the Northeast Students' Society of Delhi University (NESSDU), gathered at Jantar Mantar on January 1, 2026, to protest the killing of Anjel Chakma. The students demanded a thorough investigation into the case, transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and proper compensation for the family.

Background of the Incident

Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura's Unakoti district, was attacked by a group of six people in Dehradun on December 9, 2025. The attack was reportedly triggered by racial slurs hurled at him and his younger brother. Chakma succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on December 26, 2025.

Arrest of Accused and Demands for Stricter Laws

Dehradun police have arrested five of the six accused in the case. However, one of the accused, Yagyaraj Awasthi, a resident of Kanchanpur district in Nepal, is still at large. The students are demanding stricter laws to protect Northeast students from racial abuse and attacks.

Relevance to Northeast and Indian Context

The incident in Dehradhun underscores the continued struggle faced by students from the Northeast in dealing with racial discrimination in various parts of India. This issue is particularly relevant to the Northeast region, where students often face challenges in adapting to the cultural and social differences in other parts of the country.

Reflections and Future Steps

The protests at Jantar Mantar are a testament to the resilience and determination of students from the Northeast. The demand for justice for Anjel Chakma and stricter laws to protect Northeast students is a call for unity and solidarity. It is crucial that the authorities address these concerns promptly and effectively to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students in India.
