Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Flag Off Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Between Guwahati and Kolkata
In a significant development for Northeast India and the country as a whole, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to flag off the much-anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper train between Guwahati and Kolkata later this month. This announcement was made by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on January 2, 2026.
A Major Milestone for the Country
The Vande Bharat sleeper train, with a passenger capacity of 823, is a 16-coach train designed to operate at a speed of 180 km per hour, although it will operate at a speed of 120-130 kmph between the two cities. This new service will cover prominent districts of Assam and West Bengal, significantly reducing travel time and enhancing connectivity.
Affordable Travel Option
According to Vaishnaw, the ticket fares for the Vande Bharat sleeper train will be substantially lower compared to air travel. The 3rd-AC fare will be around Rs 2,300, 2nd-AC around Rs 3,000, and 1st-AC around Rs 3,600, which includes food. This makes it an attractive option for the middle class, as air travel between Guwahati and Kolkata currently costs around Rs 6,000-8,000.
Implications for Northeast India and Beyond
The launch of the Vande Bharat sleeper train between Guwahati and Kolkata holds immense significance for Northeast India, as it will facilitate easier and faster travel for passengers. This improved connectivity is expected to boost tourism, trade, and economic growth in the region. Moreover, the lower fares compared to air travel make it an accessible option for a larger section of the population, fostering inclusivity.
A Step Towards Modernizing India's Railway Network
The Vande Bharat sleeper train is just one of many initiatives aimed at modernizing India's railway network. According to Vaishnaw, eight more trains will be ready for operation in six months, and by this year, 12 trains will be operational. From next year onwards, production will ramp up rapidly as the entire supply chain will be in place.
The Vande Bharat sleeper train features ergonomically designed berths, automatic doors, enhanced ride comfort, an automatic train protection system, an emergency talk-back system, and disinfectant technology to maintain high sanitation standards. These advanced features are a testament to the government's commitment to modernizing India's railway network.
Catering to Local Cuisines
To enhance the travel experience, trains originating from Guwahati will serve Assamese cuisine, while those starting from Kolkata will offer Bengali food. This attention to local cuisines reflects the government's commitment to preserving and promoting India's rich cultural diversity.
The launch of the Vande Bharat sleeper train between Guwahati and Kolkata is a significant step towards modernizing India's railway network and enhancing connectivity in Northeast India. As the train becomes operational, we can expect to witness increased economic growth, tourism, and improved quality of life for the people of the region.
