Maritime Skills Centre in Dibrugarh: A Game-Changer for Northeast India
Boosting Employment Opportunities in the Maritime Sector
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the Centre of Excellence on Maritime Skills, being set up in Dibrugarh, will be completed by 2026. This center aims to equip the youth of the Northeast region with maritime skills, opening up employment opportunities not only in India but also abroad.
The maritime sector has long been overlooked in the region due to a lack of required skills among the local workforce. However, with the establishment of this center, this issue is expected to be resolved, providing a significant boost to employment opportunities in the sector.
Fostering Growth in the Maritime Sector
Alongside the Centre of Excellence, the shipbuilding center at Pandu is also slated for completion this year. This development is expected to provide a substantial impetus to the maritime sector in the Northeast.
Sonowal also mentioned that upcoming jetties, terminals, and foreign barges operating in the state would improve the movement of vessels in the waterways of Assam. This, in turn, would facilitate the movement of cargo, cruise, and passenger vessels, contributing to the growth of the maritime sector.
Infrastructure Development and Regional Growth
Sonowal emphasized that the Central Government would prioritize quality and timely completion of ongoing projects in the Northeast region in 2026. He also highlighted the rapid growth Assam has experienced under the NDA Government at the Centre.
Improvements in rail, road, waterways, and internet connectivity have been key focus areas for the NDA Government in the Northeast, with the aim of accelerating the region's growth. Sonowal also noted that the Northeast has been brought into the mainstream of India, boosting the self-confidence of its people.
A New Era for Northeast India
Sonowal highlighted the significant strides made in addressing insurgency issues in the region, with most militant groups coming overground and signing peace pacts with the government. He attributed this progress to the Prime Minister's keen interest in resolving the insurgency problem.
For Northeast India, this development represents a new era, with improved connectivity, economic growth, and increased self-confidence among its people. The completion of the Centre of Excellence on Maritime Skills and the shipbuilding center at Pandu will further solidify this progress.
