Protecting the Pride of Manipur: The Sangai
The Manipur Students Federation (MSF) has issued an urgent call to action, appealing to the people of Manipur and the state government to safeguard the Sangai, the state animal of Manipur, from extinction. This rare brow-antlered deer, deeply rooted in the history, culture, and identity of Manipur, faces severe threats due to habitat degradation, climate change, and human-induced interventions.
The Critical State of the Sangai's Habitat
The Sangai, unique to the floating wetlands of Keibul Lamjao National Park on Loktak Lake, is now under threat due to changes in the lake's ecological balance. The construction of the Ithai Barrage for the Loktak Hydroelectric Project has altered the natural relationship between land and water, leading to habitat destruction and loss of vegetation, crucial for the Sangai's survival.
Legal Protection and Lack of Enforcement
Despite being protected under various national and international laws, the Sangai faces a lack of effective care and monitoring by the concerned government departments. This situation is concerning, as the Sangai is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is protected under Schedule One of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, as well as Appendix One of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
