Meghalaya's Riiohlang Dhar Shines on the International Football Stage
The small state of Meghalaya in North East India is making waves in the global football community, with one of its own, Riiohlang Dhar, being selected for the FIFA Refereeing International list for the year 2026.
A Rising Star in the World of Football
Dhar's journey in football officiating has been nothing short of remarkable. Over the years, she has officiated at numerous international events, including the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in the Dominican Republic in 2024, where she became the second Indian match official at a World Cup. In the same year, she was also appointed as an official at the AFC U-17 Women's Asian Cup in Indonesia.
Awards and Recognition
In May 2025, Dhar was named Female Assistant Referee of the Year by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for the 2024-25 season. Her contributions to football were further recognized in December 2025, when she was one of the 40-odd individuals honoured for their contribution to Meghalaya football at an MFA awards function to kick off the association's 50th anniversary celebrations.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Dhar's achievements serve as an inspiration to young football enthusiasts in Meghalaya and across India. Her success story underscores the potential for individuals from the North East region to excel in sports, not just at the local or national level, but on the global stage as well.
The North East Connection
The North East region of India has a rich sports culture, with football being particularly popular. However, opportunities for growth and development have often been limited due to geographical and infrastructural challenges. Dhar's rise in the world of football could open doors for more talent from the region to come forward and make their mark.
Looking Ahead
As Dhar prepares for the 2026 season, the focus is on her continued success and growth. Her journey so far is a testament to her dedication, hard work, and passion for the game. For the football community in Meghalaya and beyond, her story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration.
