Analysis: 2026: The year of educated unemployed?

Nagaland's Educated Unemployed Youths: A New Year's Challenge

Nagaland's Educated Unemployed Youths: A New Year's Challenge

As we step into 2026, the people of Nagaland face a pressing question: Can the Educated Unemployed Youths (EUYs) rise to the challenge and transform the year ahead? With high unemployment rates, political hurdles, and a lack of technical skills, the future seems uncertain for this demographic.

Unemployment and Income Disparity

The Nagaland Directorate of Economics and Statistics reported that unemployment in the state was at 16.07% in 2025, but this percentage is likely to be much higher when accounting for those who haven't registered their status. With thousands of graduates and postgraduates passing out of colleges and universities each year, the job market is saturated, leaving many EUYs feeling hopeless and reliant on their parents' income.

Political Appointments and a Paralyzed System

The government of Nagaland is criticized for focusing more on backdoor political appointments, disregarding merit. With an Opposition-less government that operates without breaks, the EUYs face a difficult and oppressive situation.

Low Technical Skills and Sovereignty Tax

The EUYs' struggle to enter entrepreneurial initiatives is further compounded by low technical skills and the sovereignty tax imposed by various National Worker Factions. These groups fight for different types of sovereignty for the Naga people, making it challenging for EUYs to navigate this complex landscape.

A Call to Action for the EUYs

Khekiye K. Sema, a retired IAS officer, believes that the EUYs can become a powerful force for change if they organize and work together to find solutions. He encourages them to stand up for the greater good of all and make 2026 a resounding year for the EUYs in Nagaland.

For the North East region and India as a whole, the success of Nagaland's EUYs could serve as a model for other states facing similar challenges. By addressing the root causes of unemployment, improving technical skills, and reforming political appointments, we can create a more equitable and prosperous future for all.

A New Year, A New Beginning

As we enter 2026, it is essential to remember that the EUYs are not just statistics; they are individuals with dreams, aspirations, and the potential to contribute positively to society. By supporting and empowering them, we can create a brighter future for Nagaland and the entire Northeast region.
