Dependency Syndrome: A Looming Challenge in Arunachal Pradesh

A New Year Reflection: Dependency Syndrome in Arunachal Pradesh

As we step into the New Year, it's time to take a closer look at the socio-economic landscape of Arunachal Pradesh, a state that has witnessed significant change and growth in the last two decades. One issue that demands our attention is the dependency syndrome, a phenomenon that has crept into our society and could pose a severe threat if left unaddressed.

The Rise of Migrant Workers

A striking observation made during the last two decades is the surge in migrant workers from neighboring states, particularly Assam, in the state capital, Itanagar. These workers have filled gaps in various sectors, from domestic chores to agriculture and construction. However, this reliance on outsiders has led to a concerning situation, leaving local residents at the mercy of closed markets during festivals.

The Impact on Local Youth

The most alarming aspect of this dependency syndrome is its impact on the younger generation. Children are absorbing the language and behavior of their domestic help, which could lead to a gradual erosion of our cultural identity.

Reluctance in Local Workforce and Government Aid

The reluctance of the local workforce to participate in various tasks, coupled with the reliance on government aids, has further fueled this dependency. This situation is evident in minor repairs, fish/meat markets, and even in the absence of local workers during festivals.

Opportunities for Local Youth

While the Arunachal Pradesh government has taken steps to address this issue through various youth-oriented programs, it's crucial to ensure that these opportunities are extended to local youths rather than outsiders. By doing so, we can foster a culture of self-sufficiency and empower our local workforce.

The Call for Local Empowerment

The future of Arunachal Pradesh lies in the hands of its youth. It's high time they heed the call for "vocal for local" and push for its implementation in practice. As the saying goes, "India rises when Arunachal rises," and for us, Arunachal will only rise when its people, especially the youth, take charge of their future.
