Assam Politics: BPF Chief Hagrama Mohilary on UPPL and BTR
Mohilary's View on UPPL's Role in Assam Assembly
Bodoland People's Front (BPF) President and Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief, Hagrama Mohilary, has expressed no objection to the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) gaining representation in the Assam Assembly or joining the state Cabinet after the 2026 elections. However, he has ruled out any alliance with UPPL within the BTR.
Mohilary stated, "UPPL's role could be acceptable at the state or central level, but not within the BTC. We have nothing to say if BJP again decides to give a share to UPPL in the state or Delhi, but it has no stake in BTC."
Development Work in Bodoland Region
Mohilary highlighted ongoing development work across the Bodoland region, mentioning the approval of a Rs 150-crore mini secretariat in Udalguri as one of the major projects.
Preparations for 2026 Assam Assembly Elections
Speaking about the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Mohilary indicated that preparations are underway, with possible early elections before Rongali Bihu. He also confirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Assam on January 17.
Implications for North East and India
The political dynamics in Assam and the Bodoland Territorial Region have significant implications for the North East region and India as a whole. The BPF's stance towards UPPL could influence alliances and power-sharing arrangements in the region.
Reflections and Forward Look
As the political landscape in Assam and the North East evolves, it is crucial to monitor the developments closely. The 2026 elections will be a testament to the regional political climate and the interplay of various political parties. The focus on development work in the Bodoland region offers a positive outlook for the region's progress.
