Cleaning Up Arunachal's Yagamso River: A Step Towards Sustainable Waste Management
In a commendable effort towards environmental conservation, the Youth Mission for Clean River (YMCR) recently conducted a cleanliness drive at the Yagamso river in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. The drive, held on the 3rd of January, resulted in the removal of a staggering 1,800 kilograms of waste.
Waste Management and Segregation
The waste collected from the river was primarily composed of household plastics and building construction materials. To ensure sustainable disposal, the YMCR team segregated the items on-site. The segregated waste was then processed accordingly. Plastic and construction debris were transported to the dumpsite for further processing, while organic wet waste was composted in pits dug nearby to naturally enrich the soil.
Community Participation and Awareness
The cleanliness drive saw active participation from members of the Nyishi Students Union of Rajiv Gandhi University and social media influencers, including Shiva Tells and Deju Bayor. YMCR's convener urged the public to adopt proper disposal habits in their daily lives, while the creative department convener, Mullu Dada, encouraged participants to spread the message of waste management among their friends and families.
The Need for Public Awareness
Influencer Shiva Tells also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of waste segregation at the source and the need for greater public awareness regarding plastic pollution. This initiative in Arunachal Pradesh underscores the urgency of similar initiatives across North East India and the nation as a whole, as the region grapples with the growing problem of waste management and environmental degradation.
Looking Ahead
The YMCR's cleanliness drive at the Yagamso river is a significant step towards sustainable waste management in Arunachal Pradesh. As we move forward, it is crucial for communities, organizations, and individuals to continue their efforts in raising awareness and implementing effective waste management strategies. Only through collective action can we ensure a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for our region and our nation.
