Road Accident in East Kameng District: Ten Injured due to Brake Failure

Importance of Road Safety in Northeast India

A road accident in East Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh, has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the Northeast region. On January 4, 2021, a Bolero pickup vehicle met with an accident at Lumdang, resulting in injuries for ten passengers.

Accident Details and Responses

The accident occurred due to a brake failure, as confirmed by East Kameng Superintendent of Police (SP), Kamdam Sikom. The vehicle, carrying around 18 passengers, was on its way to Naraba, Lumdang, for a picnic when the incident occurred around 9:30 am.

Upon realizing the brake failure, the driver attempted to steer the vehicle towards the roadside hill, but the vehicle subsequently rolled over. Three passengers suffered head injuries and were referred to Tezpur, Assam, for medical treatment. A suo motu case has been registered in response to the accident.

Implications for Northeast India and Broader Context

Road accidents are a significant concern across India, and the Northeast region is no exception. The hilly terrain and poor road conditions in many areas contribute to the high incidence of accidents. Improving road safety infrastructure, such as installing proper signage, repairing potholes, and implementing stricter vehicle maintenance regulations, can help mitigate these risks.

Road Safety Measures in Arunachal Pradesh

The Arunachal Pradesh government has taken steps to address road safety concerns. In 2019, the state government launched a road safety campaign, emphasizing the importance of wearing seatbelts, helmets, and following traffic rules. Additionally, the government has plans to improve road infrastructure, including the construction of new highways and the renovation of existing roads.

Looking Ahead: Prioritizing Road Safety in Northeast India

As the Northeast region continues to develop, it is essential to prioritize road safety measures to protect the lives of its citizens. Collaboration between the central and state governments, as well as the active participation of local communities, is crucial in ensuring the implementation of effective road safety policies. By working together, we can help reduce the number of road accidents and make the Northeast a safer place for all.
