Analysis: Assam Congress opens applications for 2026 Assembly polls

Assam Congress Gears Up for 2026 Elections

Assam Congress Initiates 2026 Assembly Election Preparations

The Assam Congress has taken a significant step towards the 2026 Assembly elections by launching the candidate application process at Rajiv Bhawan, Guwahati. This move signifies an organizational push ahead of the upcoming high-stakes polls.

Candidate Application Process

Aspirants from all Assembly constituencies have been invited to seek party tickets by submitting the prescribed form along with a non-refundable fee of 50,000. The application window will remain open till January 20, and party workers have confirmed that application forms are also available on the Congress official website.

Key Aspirants and Constituencies

  • Bipul Gogoi: He filed his application seeking the party ticket from the No. 119 Tingkhong Legislative Assembly constituency, expressing confidence about political change under the leadership of APCC president Gaurav Gogoi.
  • Abu Taher Ali Bepari: He applied for the Congress ticket from the No. 8 Dhubri constituency, located along the India-Bangladesh border. Bepari believes the electoral contest in Lower Assam will primarily be against the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which he described as the BJP's "B-team."

Congress's Attack on BJP-led NDA Government

As the application process commenced, the Congress intensified its criticism of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. Dhubri Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain asserted that voters across the state are disillusioned with the ruling administration and determined to vote it out in the 2026 elections.

Election Strategy and Committees

Speaking at a press briefing in Kokrajhar, Hussain revealed that the party had formed several committees to streamline its election strategy. These include panels for manifesto preparation, campaigning, coordination, and publicity.

Implications for North East and India

The political landscape in Assam and the North East region as a whole will be significantly influenced by the 2026 Assembly elections. The results will provide insights into the electorate's preferences and sentiments, which could have broader implications for Indian politics.

Looking Ahead

With the application process underway and key strategies being put in place, the stage is set for an intense political battle in Assam. The coming months will reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the major political parties, providing a clearer picture of the political landscape in the region.
