Analysis: Angry residents dismantle CRPF bunker at Saiton Bridge after blasts in Nganukhong

Unrest in Bishnupur District: CRPF Bunker Dismantled After Militant Attack

Tension Erupts in Bishnupur District Following Militant Attack

A wave of tension swept through the Saiton Nganukhong area of Bishnupur district in Manipur, India, after a militant attack on Monday morning. The incident, which resulted in civilian injuries and property damage, led to the dismantling of a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bunker by angry residents, who accused the security personnel of negligence.

Negligence Allegations and Ensuing Actions

According to local sources, the twin bomb blasts occurred around 9 am, causing widespread anger among the residents. They alleged that the CRPF personnel stationed at the Saiton Bridge bunker had failed to conduct proper checks, allowing the militants to carry out the attack. In response, enraged locals dismantled the bunker, escalating the tension in the area.

Official Response and Assurances

Kumbi Assembly Constituency MLA Sanasam Premchandra, along with the Superintendent of Police Bishnupur Th. Shankerdev and the Additional District Magistrate of Bishnupur, rushed to the site following the incident. The officials inspected the blast site and attempted to pacify the agitated residents. The residents were assured that the CRPF personnel would be relocated from inside Nganukhong village, and an Indian Reserve Battalion post would be set up at the Nganukhong Primary School to strengthen security in the area.

Impact on Local Residents

Due to the prevailing situation, Meitei residents of Nganukhong, located beyond Saiton Bridge, have been unable to return to their homes and are continuing to stay at relief camps. However, local sources claimed that Bengali residents are still staying in Nganukhong. This incident underscores the ongoing ethnic and communal tensions in the region, a concern shared by other parts of Northeast India and India as a whole.

Looking Forward: Security and Community Cohesion

The dismantling of the CRPF bunker raises questions about the effectiveness of security measures in place and the relationship between the local population and security forces. It is crucial for authorities to address these concerns and work towards rebuilding trust with the community. This incident serves as a reminder of the need for strong, effective, and community-focused security measures in conflict-affected areas like Bishnupur district.
