Analysis: Delete anti-BJP voters: Akhil Gogoi makes explosive allegations against Assam BJP

Political Storm in Assam: Allegations of Electoral Roll Manipulation

A Political Storm Brews in Assam: Electoral Roll Manipulation Allegations

In a bold move that has set off a political whirlwind in Assam, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has accused the ruling BJP of large-scale manipulation of electoral rolls ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Gogoi's allegations, if proven true, could have significant implications for the democratic process in Assam and beyond.

The Allegations

Gogoi, the president of Raijor Dal, claims that the BJP government and party leadership have prepared a blueprint to systematically delete the names of lakhs of anti-BJP voters from the voter list. He alleges that this directive was issued by BJP's state president Dilip Saikia during a video conference with party ministers, MLAs, and district presidents.

According to Gogoi, the meeting took place on December 4 at around 8 pm and included a secret discussion where party leaders were instructed to target voters in areas where the BJP receives fewer votes. He claims that he personally heard the conversation through an associate.

The Responsibilities

Gogoi further alleged that minister Ashok Singhal has been assigned special responsibility to oversee voter list revision in 60 identified Assembly constituencies. A plan has allegedly been drawn up to remove the names of voters considered challenging for the BJP.

He claimed that MLAs and mandal presidents have been instructed to prepare booth-wise lists of such voters and submit them by December 12.

The Instructions

Gogoi also alleged that the video conference included strict instructions on party campaigning, with Dilip Saikia reportedly directing each MLA to carry out at least 500 wall writings and warning against negligence.

The Implications and North East Connection

Drawing parallels with the earlier delimitation exercise, MLA Gogoi claimed that the BJP is now attempting to consolidate its electoral advantage by deleting names from voter lists. This could potentially affect the political landscape of not just Assam but the entire North East region, given the region's unique political dynamics and the delicate balance of power among various political parties.

The Response and Future Implications

When contacted, BJP leaders had not issued any official response to the allegations till the filing of this report. Party sources, however, have dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated, stating that voter list revision is a routine process carried out under the supervision of the Election Commission.

An official reaction from the BJP and the state government is awaited. Meanwhile, Gogoi has issued a direct challenge to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, demanding a high-level judicial inquiry into the matter and threatening to undergo a narco test if his allegations are found to be false.

This political storm in Assam underscores the importance of vigilance and transparency in the electoral process. As we approach the Assembly elections, it is crucial that all parties adhere to democratic norms and uphold the integrity of the electoral rolls.
