Arunachal Pradesh Takes Steps to Curb Illegal Immigration
In a move to safeguard the land, culture, and rights of indigenous communities, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has directed district administrations to identify and demolish all unauthorized religious structures in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).
Digitizing the ILP System
Khandu announced that the state government would soon roll out a fully digitized Inner Line Permit (ILP) system. This step aims to strengthen monitoring and curb illegal immigration, which has been a growing concern in the region. The digital platform will allow for better tracking of laborers brought in from outside the state, helping to prevent unauthorized migration.
Stricter Enforcement of ILP Norms
Employers bringing laborers from outside the state will now be required to notify the government for verification. Furthermore, amendments to the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR), 1873, are being planned to make the law more stringent. Khandu emphasized that the enforcement of ILP norms and border controls would be strengthened, ensuring all actions are carried out within the framework of the law.
Youth Protests and Demands
The directive comes in response to sustained agitation by several youth organizations, who have accused illegal immigrants of constructing unauthorized religious structures and settlements. Protests have included a 12-hour bandh in the state capital, with demands such as the removal of an allegedly illegally constructed Capital Jama Masjid in Naharlagun, action against unauthorized settlements, a ban on weekly markets run by undocumented settlers, and tighter monitoring at entry gates.
Police Actions and Future Plans
Police officials have already intensified ILP enforcement and verification drives to address loopholes and maintain law and order. The future plans for the region include strengthening border controls and ensuring that all actions are carried out within the legal framework.
This development is significant for the North East region and India as a whole, as it underscores the commitment to protect the rights and cultural heritage of indigenous communities while addressing the issue of illegal immigration.
