Unrest in Manipur: IPOM Protests Bomb Attacks, Urges Peaceful Demonstrations
In the northeastern state of Manipur, India, the Indigenous People Organisation Manipur (IPOM) has called for peaceful sit-in protests to condemn recent bomb attacks in the Bishnupur district. The organization's action follows a series of improvised explosive device (IED) blasts that left two civilians injured.
Withdrawn Shutdown, Urged Peaceful Protests
Initially, IPOM, along with other civil society groups, announced a total shutdown in protest against the bomb attacks. However, the organization later withdrew the call for a statewide shutdown but urged people to stage peaceful sit-in demonstrations across localities.
Bomb Attacks and Their Impact
On January 6, two people were injured in Bishnupur district when an IED planted near an abandoned Meitei family's house exploded. A second explosion occurred shortly thereafter in Saiton village, injuring a man and a woman. The injured were identified as Soibam Sanatomba Singh (52) and Nongthombam Indubala Devi (37). The abandoned house belongs to Salam Mani Singh, who has been staying in a relief camp since May 2023 following the outbreak of Meitei-Kuki ethnic violence.
Security Forces' Response and Vigilance
In response to the bomb attacks, security forces have intensified vigilance in the area, and investigations into the blasts are ongoing.
Relevance to Northeast India and Beyond
The ongoing ethnic tensions and violent incidents in Manipur are a matter of concern for the entire Northeast region of India, which has a history of ethnic and religious conflicts. The region's delicate peace is often disrupted by such incidents, which can have far-reaching implications for the region's stability and development.
Looking Ahead: Peaceful Protests and the Pursuit of Justice
As the people of Manipur continue to grapple with the aftermath of the bomb attacks, the call for peaceful sit-in protests serves as a testament to their resilience and determination to restore peace and security in their state. The ongoing investigations into the blasts offer hope for justice and a resolution to the ongoing ethnic tensions.
