Lada-Sarli Frontier Highway Compensation Scam: A Closer Look

Lada-Sarli Frontier Highway Compensation Scam: A Contentious Issue in Arunachal Pradesh

The Lada-Sarli Frontier Highway compensation scam, which has been a topic of discussion in Arunachal Pradesh for several months, has recently gained renewed attention following the East Kameng Social Welfare & Cultural Organisation's (EKSWCO) demand for the arrest of all involved officials, including former East Kameng deputy commissioner Himanshu Nigam.

Investigation and Strict Action

Chief Minister Pema Khandu, during a press briefing, reaffirmed that whoever is found guilty after the investigation by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) would face strict action. The government has also taken steps to reassess the entire stretch of the highway, with committees being constituted for this purpose.

Central Agencies and Jurisdiction

Regarding the EKSWCO's demand to let the scam be investigated by central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Khandu stated that the state government cannot direct these agencies to investigate. He added that central agencies will take their independent decisions, and if they consider it worth investigating, they will do so, given that the project involves central government funds.

Allegations and Arrests

The EKSWCO has questioned why the ACB has arrested only former DLRSO Takam Kechak and not other involved officials, bank managers, and brokers. The organization believes that these individuals played an equal role in siphoning off government money.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

The Lada-Sarli Frontier Highway compensation scam underscores the need for transparency and accountability in public projects, a concern that is not unique to Arunachal Pradesh but resonates across North East India and the broader Indian context. The investigation and its outcomes will set a precedent for future projects and serve as a deterrent against corruption.

Looking Forward

As the investigation continues, it is crucial for all stakeholders to remain vigilant and demand accountability. The people of Arunachal Pradesh and the North East region as a whole have the right to expect that their tax money is used responsibly and that those found guilty of corruption are brought to justice. The outcome of this case will not only impact the region but also serve as a testament to the government's commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring transparency in public projects.
