Analysis: ASHAs to protest from Jan 8 for pending incentives

ASHA Workers' Strike in Meghalaya: Unpaid Incentives Cause Unrest

ASHA Workers in Meghalaya Demand Payment of Overdue Incentives

In a significant development, over 7,000 Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in Meghalaya have announced an indefinite strike, effective from January 8, 2026. The reason behind this action is the non-payment of their pending incentives, a crucial part of their remuneration.

Delayed Payments and Unpaid Dues

The ASHA Workers Union, led by Advisor Sonny Kharjana, has expressed its dissatisfaction over the delayed payments. The union had set a deadline for the state government on December 19, 2025, to clear the dues, but the incentives remain unpaid. In some districts and health facilities, ASHAs have not received their incentives for the last 5-10 months.

Integration of Payment Systems and the New Platform

The National Health Mission (NHM) has attributed the delay in payment to the integration of the payment system from the ASHA App to a new platform called SNA SPARSH. The NHM has assured the workers that the new system is ready, and the payment issue will be resolved soon.

State and Central Government's Responsibilities

It is important to note that the state government pays the honorarium to the ASHAs, while the central government is responsible for the incentives, which are currently overdue. This situation highlights the need for better coordination between the state and central governments to ensure timely payments to these frontline health workers.

Implications for Northeast India and Beyond

The ASHA workers' strike in Meghalaya has far-reaching implications, not just for the state but for the entire Northeast region and India as a whole. ASHA workers play a vital role in India's primary healthcare system, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Their absence could disrupt essential health services, affecting millions of people.

Looking Ahead: Resolving the Crisis and Ensuring ASHA Workers' Welfare

The ongoing strike underscores the need for immediate action to resolve the payment issues and ensure the welfare of ASHA workers. It is crucial that the state and central governments work together to address this issue promptly, ensuring that ASHA workers continue to provide vital healthcare services to the communities they serve.
