Analysis: BJP seeks special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Assam

BJP Demands Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls in Assam

BJP Demands Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls in Assam

The demand for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Assam has gained momentum, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading the charge. The ruling party in the state believes that such a move is crucial to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and ensure a correct voter list.

Concerns Over Discrepancies and Voter List Integrity

State BJP president Dilip Saikia raised concerns over discrepancies in the electoral roll, stating that an SIR is necessary to prepare a correct voter list. Saikia emphasized that a correct voter list is essential for the electoral process under a democratic setup. He pointed out discrepancies in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation process, which led to the rejection of the NRC data and the enrollment of suspected people during the time of the Congress party's rule.

The Need for a Nationwide Revision

Saikia highlighted that such nationwide revisions have taken place many times since India's Independence but have not happened in the last 20 years. He stressed the importance of cleaning up the voter list to ensure that only genuine Indian citizens remain in the voter list.

Politics of Appeasement and Vote Bank

Accusing the Opposition parties of indulging in the politics of appeasement and vote bank, Saikia accused them of protecting the Miya vote bank and not wanting the deletion of the names of even ten Miyas from the voter list, even if the names of thousands of indigenous people get removed. He urged the people of Assam to be cautious of these leaders, who he deemed dangerous for the state.

Relevance to North East India and India at Large

The demand for a Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll in Assam is significant for the entire North East region, as it underscores the need for electoral reforms to ensure fair and transparent elections. The issue also highlights the broader challenge of maintaining the integrity of the electoral process in India, where concerns over voter fraud and the manipulation of voter lists have been raised in various states.

Looking Forward

The demand for an SIR in Assam is a step towards ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process. The BJP's stance on this issue underscores the party's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral system and safeguarding the interests of the genuine voters in the state. As the electoral process unfolds, it will be interesting to see how the Election Commission of India responds to the BJP's demand and whether other states in the North East region follow suit.
