Analysis: Commemorative Board Installed at Mount Manipur in South Andaman

Commemorating the Unsung Heroes: Manipur and the Andaman Connection

Unveiling the Past: A Commemorative Board in South Andaman

In a significant move to highlight the historical bond between Manipur and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a commemorative board was recently installed at Mount Manipur in South Andaman. This board, a tribute to the shared legacy of courage and sacrifice, serves as a testament to the enduring connection between these two regions.

Revisiting the Unsung Heroes of Manipur

The commemorative board, titled "Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Manipur: Separated by Distance but Connected Through History of Courage and Sacrifice," was inaugurated on 06 January 2026. The event was graced by Aswin J. Parihar, Indian Forest Service, Divisional Forest Officer of South Andaman, and Rajshekhar, Logistics Manager of Experience Andamans Tours Private Limited.

The installation of the board is part of an ongoing program by the Egalitarian Manipur of the Altruists Trust (EMA Trust). This initiative aims to revive and promote the historical connection between Manipur and the Andamans, focusing on the 23 unsung war heroes of Manipur who were exiled by the British to the penal settlement at Mount Manipur following the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.

Celebrating Manipur's Role in India's Freedom Struggle

The commemorative board honors these heroes and seeks to preserve heritage, enhance historical awareness, and inspire future generations with values of courage, patriotism, and selfless service to the nation. It also underscores Manipur's role in India's freedom struggle, a recognition reflected in the Government of India's renaming of Mount Harriet as Mount Manipur in October 2021.

Implications for the North East and Beyond

The installation of this commemorative board holds relevance for the North East region and India as a whole. It serves as a reminder of the rich historical tapestry that binds various parts of the country, fostering a sense of unity and shared identity.

For the North East, in particular, such initiatives can contribute to the region's growing prominence in India's tourism landscape. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with their pristine beaches and unique cultural heritage, are already a popular tourist destination. The addition of historical sites like Mount Manipur, with their compelling stories, can attract more visitors and generate economic opportunities for local communities.

Looking Ahead: Preserving the Past for the Future

As we reflect on this significant step, we are reminded of the importance of preserving our historical landmarks. Initiatives like the one taken by the EMA Trust not only honor the past but also educate future generations about our shared history.

As we move forward, let us continue to celebrate and learn from our shared past, fostering a sense of unity and mutual respect among the diverse peoples of India.
