Strengthening Wildlife Conservation in North East India
In a significant step towards wildlife conservation, the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and Fondation Segre (FS) recently donated essential equipment aid to the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary (EWS) in West Kameng district, North East India.
Collaborative Conservation Efforts
The donation, which included a snake rescue kit, camera trap, trekking gear, headlamps, tents, a weather station, and other research tools, was handed over to 30 forest staffers. This equipment will aid the EWS team in their protection and conservation work, as highlighted by EWS Range Forest Officer Yachang Kani.
The collaboration between WTI and local conservationists is a testament to the power of joint efforts in preserving the region's biodiversity. The WTI's commitment to supporting passionate conservationists, as stated by Dr. Panjit Basumatary, is a beacon of hope for the future of wildlife conservation in North East India.
Local Participation and Empowerment
Local participation is crucial in the success of conservation efforts. Honorary wildlife warden Lobsang Tashi and Shergaon Forest Division DFO Tabom Soki emphasized the importance of increased collaboration and local participation in conservation initiatives.
The involvement of local communities not only fosters a sense of ownership but also ensures the sustainability of conservation efforts. This is particularly relevant in North East India, where the unique biodiversity and cultural heritage are closely intertwined.
Butterfly Conservation and Future Prospects
The equipment aid was facilitated by Sarika Baidya, team leader of the Bhutan Glory Project, Nature Mates, Kolkata, and Range Forest Officer Kani. The Bhutan Glory Project, which has been working at the EWS since 2023 for butterfly conservation, recently welcomed WTI's support.
The success of this collaboration could pave the way for further collaborations and initiatives aimed at conserving the region's diverse wildlife. As conservation efforts continue to grow, so does the hope for a sustainable future where both wildlife and human communities thrive.
Reflections and Looking Forward
The donation of equipment aid to the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is a positive step towards strengthening conservation efforts in North East India. The collaboration between WTI, local conservationists, and the Forest Department serves as an example of the potential for effective conservation when different stakeholders work together.
As we look forward, it is essential to continue fostering such collaborations and encouraging local participation in conservation initiatives. The unique biodiversity of North East India is a precious resource that requires our collective efforts to protect and preserve for future generations.
