Harshita Devi, despite facing poverty and lacking formal education, has constructed a unique Meji all by herself, showcasing a powerful story of resilience and innovation.
The Unique Meji
In contrast to the communal effort typically seen in Meji construction, Harshita Devi, a resident of Barmurikanar near Pagladiya embankment, embarked on a solo mission to create a Meji for Bhogali Bihu 2026. Her creation, a boat-like structure, has become a talking point across Nalbari, reflecting years of imagination, patience, and perseverance.
Innovation Amidst Adversity
Harshita, who had to drop out of school at a young age due to financial hardship, has never received formal training in art or construction. Yet, year after year, she has surprised her community with innovative Meji designs. Her 2024 Meji was aasaang ghor-style, while 2025 saw a two-storied palace-inspired structure. This year's boat-shaped Meji has become a symbol of her indomitable spirit.
The Journey of a Dream
As a child, Harshita longed to travel by boat but never had the opportunity. Unable to swim and constrained by poverty, she instead expressed her desire through drawings. This Bhogali, she decided to give physical form to that dream. "I made everything myself," Harshita said, her voice steady with quiet pride. "It took me five days. I collected all the materials on my own from nearby fields."
Harshita's journey was not without challenges. Many people laughed at her and discouraged her, but she persevered, working alone and completing the project herself. She plans to keep her creations as a testament to her journey and the dreams she has brought to life.
Self-Reliance and Inspiration
In addition to her remarkable Meji, Harshita has also carved out a small livelihood by making and selling traditional Bihupitha and sweets. Her story serves as an inspiration not just for women but for the entire village.
