Assam is on the brink of a major judicial infrastructure overhaul, as the state prepares to construct a modern judicial city at Rangmahal in North Guwahati. This development, set to commence with the laying of the foundation stone by the Chief Justice of India on Sunday, promises to reshape the legal landscape of Assam and potentially impact the broader North East region.
A New Judicial Hub for Assam
The upcoming judicial city will house the new Gauhati High Court complex, district courts, an auditorium, and a state-of-the-art judicial library, forming an integrated legal hub. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that this project is not just about constructing a building, but about creating judicial infrastructure for the next generation of Assam.
Addressing Connectivity Concerns
Concerns over the relocation of court infrastructure have been raised by lawyers and residents. However, Sarma reassured that connectivity issues are being addressed. He explained that traveling from Bharalumukh to Rangmahal will not be significantly more expensive than the current cost of reaching the High Court. Additionally, alternative transport options like the ropeway have already eased cross-river travel.
North Guwahati's Institutional Growth and Urban Development
North Guwahati's growth is evident with the presence of institutions like IIT Guwahati and an upcoming law university. Sarma highlighted that these institutions benefit from better mobility and lower congestion than the city core. With the completion of the North Guwahati bridge, travel time from the city will actually be shorter than commuting within Guwahati itself.

Sarma's vision for the future includes a metro line along these routes and a comprehensive ring road system, should he remain Chief Minister for another 10 years. Rangmahal is envisioned as a future administrative and judicial hub for Assam, set to undergo significant development in the next decade.
