Soil Health Training and Ginger Value Chain Project in Arunachal Pradesh

A Strategic Approach to Agricultural Development in Arunachal Pradesh

In a significant move towards empowering local farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, a training program on soil health and ginger value chain was recently conducted in Keyi Panyor district, Arunachal Pradesh. This initiative, under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) DPR project, aims to enhance crop production, improve soil health, and boost the profitability of ginger farmers.

Emphasizing Soil Testing and Post-Harvest Management

Subject matter specialists from the KVK, Yachuli, highlighted the importance of soil testing and its impact on crop production and soil health. They also provided valuable insights on post-harvest management of ginger and techniques for value addition to increase profitability.

Rural Business Incubation Centre and Mentorship Opportunities

Participants were informed about the Rural Business Incubation Centre set up at Rajiv Gandhi University, which offers mentorship and business planning training to aspiring entrepreneurs. This resource will undoubtedly foster innovation and support the growth of businesses in the region.

Flood Moderation, Power Benefits, and Employment Generation

The proposed project, estimated to cost Rs 26,069.50 crore, is designed to bring about several benefits. These include flood moderation in the Brahmaputra basin, 12 percent free power to the Arunachal Pradesh government, annual yields of about Rs 486 crore, and contributions of Rs 40 crore per year to the Local Area Development Fund (LADF). Moreover, the project is expected to lead to regional infrastructure development, generate significant employment (approximately 300 direct jobs and 2,500 contract workers during peak construction), and contribute to the state government's revenue through a first-year return of about Rs 127 crore on the Rs 750 crore central financial assistance.

National Impact and Local Relevance

On a broader scale, the Power Ministry has given in-principle approval for Rs 3,000 crore expenditure for testing facilities across the country. This decision underscores the government's commitment to improving agricultural infrastructure and practices nationwide, with local initiatives like the ginger value chain project serving as key stepping stones.

By doing so, we can help ensure food security, improve livelihoods, and contribute to the overall economic growth of North East India and the nation as a whole.
