In a significant development for farmers in North East India, a technology trial of oyster mushroom cultivation using large cardamom substrate has shown promising results. This innovation, which was recently demonstrated in Anjaw and Leparada districts, could potentially revolutionize the agricultural landscape of the region.

Embracing Sustainable Agriculture: Utilizing Large Cardamom Waste

The Anjaw Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) organized a training-cum-demonstration programme on oyster mushroom cultivation at Tafraliang village. The focus was on cultivating oyster mushrooms using locally available large cardamom residues as substrate. This approach not only reduces the cost of mushroom production but also promotes eco-friendly recycling of agricultural residues.

Economic Opportunities for Small Farmers

The technology was highlighted as particularly suitable for small and marginal farmers, women, and rural youths, as it requires minimal space and investment while offering quick economic returns and improved nutritional security. Livelihood Enhancement in Leparada District

In Leparada district, the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Mushroom organized a training programme on oyster mushroom cultivation. The programme aimed to enhance the livelihood opportunities of 21 unemployed women through oyster mushroom-based enterprises. The trainees gained hands-on practical experience, learning step-by-step procedures for substrate preparation, spawning, crop management, and harvesting.
