Sankranti Rush: Analyzing the Hyderabad-Vijayawada Highway Congestion

The recent Sankranti festival season saw a significant increase in traffic on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada national highway, with thousands of families traveling to their native places. This yearly migration, the biggest festival in both Telugu states, caused a massive congestion, highlighting the need for better traffic management strategies.

Congestion at Toll Plazas

On Sunday, the Pattangi toll plaza near Hyderabad witnessed a huge rush since early hours, as families headed to towns and villages in Telangana and neighboring Andhra Pradesh. With many opting for personal transport, the national highway was chock-a-block, causing delays and congestion.

Efforts to Ease Congestion

To address the issue, authorities opened additional gates at Pattangi and took steps to ensure that the Fast Tag system worked efficiently at the toll plaza. However, the congestion persisted, with one-hour travel from Hyderabad to Patangi Toll Plaza taking 3-4 hours due to the increased traffic.

Alternate Routes and Police Measures

To alleviate the congestion, police appealed to motorists to use an alternate route to Vijayawada via Bhongir. Top police officials were also supervising the movement of vehicles, while patrolling vehicles, cranes, and ambulances were deployed at key toll plazas. In Suryapet district, police diverted traffic heading to Khammam and Rajahmundry through an alternate route.

Impact on North East India and Broader India

The Sankranti traffic congestion is not just a local issue but has broader implications for the transportation sector in India. With the increasing number of vehicles and the growing popularity of personal travel, such congestion is likely to become more frequent, affecting travel times and causing inconvenience to commuters.

Reflections and Future Steps

The Sankranti rush on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway serves as a reminder of the need for better traffic management strategies, especially during festive seasons. This includes the implementation of toll-free periods, the expansion of highways, and the promotion of public transportation to reduce the number of private vehicles on the road.

In the North East region and across India, similar traffic congestion issues may arise during festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, and Christmas. By learning from the Sankranti example, authorities can take proactive measures to ensure smooth traffic flow and minimize inconvenience to travelers.
