A Heartwarming Reunion: 20-Year-Old Missing Case Solved in Assam

The Rescue Operation

In a remarkable feat, the District Community Development Programme (DCDP) in Biswanath district, Assam, successfully rescued a woman who had been missing for over 20 years. The rescued woman, Manju Mardi, was found in Dimapur, Nagaland, and reunited with her family after a two-decade-long search.

The Long Journey: From Gohpur to Dimapur

The tragic journey of Manju Mardi began in 2001 when she was taken to Dimapur by her father and another woman. The plan was for her to work as a domestic help. However, the accompanying woman passed away a few days later, leaving Manju alone in a foreign land.

Despite his best efforts, Manju's father, Krishnaram Mardi, could not locate his daughter. He sold livestock and searched extensively, but to no avail. The family's hopes seemed to fade with time.

The Turning Point: A New Employer and a Decade of Hope

Manju spent the next two decades working for various employers in Dimapur. Her last employer, Victor Murry, played a crucial role in her return home. When Manju expressed her desire to return to her family, Murry reached out to several NGOs in Assam, including the DCDP.

After a series of inquiries, DCDP secretary Kretofil Bhengra was able to contact Krishnaram Mardi. With coordinated efforts, arrangements were made to bring Manju back home.

A New Chapter: Homecoming and Recognition

Manju was escorted back to her village, Karibil Bongali, by Victor Murry and his family members, along with an official from the Dimapur ADC's office. Initially, she could not recognize her family or villagers, but she has gradually begun to identify them.

The local people have lauded the initiative of the DCDP and expressed their gratitude for reuniting Manju with her family.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

This heartwarming story highlights the importance of community development programs and the role they play in reuniting families separated by circumstances. It serves as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of hope.

In the broader context of Northeast India, such initiatives are crucial in addressing the challenges faced by the region, particularly in terms of missing persons cases, which are not uncommon due to cross-border movements and economic migration.

Reflections and Looking Forward

The successful rescue of Manju Mardi offers a glimmer of hope for other families in similar situations. It underscores the need for continued efforts to bridge the gaps that lead to such separations and to ensure that no family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one for decades.
