Analysis: BJP MLA, Taekwondo master urges Meiteis to lead peace process in Manipur

Yumnam Khemchand: A Taekwondo Master Leading Peace in Manipur

Yumnam Khemchand: A Taekwondo Master Leading Peace in Manipur

In the heart of North East India, Manipur is experiencing a significant shift, driven in part by a local BJP MLA and Taekwondo master, Yumnam Khemchand Singh. His journey, spanning over four decades, has not only made him a renowned martial artist but also a peace advocate, as he urges the Meitei community to take the lead in resolving the ongoing crisis in the state.

A Taekwondo Journey to Seoul

Khemchand began his Taekwondo journey at the age of 16, eventually becoming the founder President of the All Assam Taekwondo Association in 1982. His dedication led him to Seoul, South Korea, in 1990, where he graduated from the World Taekwondo Academy, Kukkiwon. This journey, he said, was the ultimate goal for any Taekwondo player, much like the desire of every Vaishnavite Meitei Hindu to visit Vrindavan.

A Taekwondo Pioneer in North East India

Khemchand's contributions to Taekwondo in North East India are significant. He was recognized in the early 80s as a key figure in popularizing the sport in the country and forming the Taekwondo Federation of India. He served as the Vice President of the federation. His influence extended beyond Manipur, reaching Nagaland and the northeast region as a whole.

Promoting Peace and Unity in Manipur

Beyond Taekwondo, Khemchand is now focusing on promoting peace and unity in Manipur, a state home to 36 communities. He emphasizes the need for every community to play a role in bringing peace and normalcy to the state. As the majority community, he urges the Meiteis to step up as the "big brother" in resolving the current conflict, particularly addressing the trust deficit between the Meiteis and Kukis.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

Khemchand's journey and messages resonate beyond Manipur and North East India. His dedication to Taekwondo, coupled with his commitment to peace and unity, serve as an inspiring example for many. As a region known for its diversity and complexities, the North East can learn from Khemchand's approach to unity and conflict resolution.

Looking Forward

As Khemchand continues to guide and inspire, the future of Manipur and the North East region may hold promising signs of peace and unity. With leaders like Khemchand, who are equally skilled in martial arts and conflict resolution, the region may be on the path towards a more harmonious future.
