Urgent Crisis in Garo Hills: A Matter of National Concern

A letter from the Garoland State Movement Committee to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted an escalating humanitarian, constitutional, and tribal crisis in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya, with potential implications for the entire North-Eastern region of India.

Tragic Incident and Governance Failures

The crisis has been accentuated by the brutal killing of Lt. Dilseng M. Sangma, an indigenous tribal youth, in Rajabala. This incident, allegedly involving members of a dominant community suspected to be illegal migrants, has exposed failures in governance, law enforcement, and the enforcement of constitutional safeguards.

Illegal Immigration, Land Alienation, and Law-and-Order Challenges

Widespread concern exists regarding unchecked illegal immigration into the North-Eastern region, particularly into Sixth Schedule areas. Additionally, there are credible reports of illegal and forceful occupation of tribal land, large-scale fabrication of identity documents, and the systematic exploitation of administrative loopholes to legitimize unlawful settlements.

Regional and National Implications

These developments pose a serious threat not only to indigenous land rights and demographic balance but also to national security and constitutional integrity. If left unaddressed, the unchecked influx and illegal settlements could irreversibly alter the demographic composition of the North-East, erode constitutionally protected tribal land rights, and precipitate severe and long-term law-and-order challenges.

In view of the above, the Garoland State Movement Committee has urged the Central Government to intervene decisively, in coordination with the State Governments and Autonomous District Councils, to address the crisis. The proposed actions include identifying and deporting illegal migrants, preventing and reversing illegal settlements on Sixth Schedule land, investigating and dismantling networks involved in forged identity documents, and fixing accountability upon officials who have failed in their constitutional and statutory responsibilities.

The people of the Garo Hills remain committed to peace, harmony, and the unity and integrity of the nation. However, enduring peace can only be ensured through firm, impartial, and uncompromising enforcement of the rule of law.
