Justice Sought in Tragic Anjel Chakma Case

Justice Sought in Tragic Anjel Chakma Case

The recent tragic incident involving Anjel Chakma, an MBA student from Tripura, has raised concerns about safety and justice in the North East region of India. The 24-year-old student died after a fatal attack in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on December 9, 2025.

Uttarakhand and Tripura CM's Assurance

Following the incident, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha visited Anjel's family and received assurances from his Uttarakhand counterpart, Pushkar Singh Dhami, that those involved in the murder would not be spared. Saha added that the absconding accused will be arrested by the police sooner or later.

Investigation and Family's Demand

The investigation into Anjel's murder is currently being handled by the Dehradun Police, who have constituted an SIT to investigate the case. However, Anjel's family has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the incident, citing the need for speedy justice. The family met with Tipra Motha chief, Pradyot Debbarma, to put forward their demand.

Racially Motivated Attack?

Initially, Anjel's family alleged that the attack was racially motivated, but the Dehradun Police have so far found no evidence of racial abuse. Anjel's father, Tarun Kanti Chakma, a BSF jawan, expressed his desire to be stationed at BSF's Tripura Frontier headquarters at Salbagan.

Implications for North East and India

This incident highlights the need for increased safety measures and justice for residents of the North East region, who often face discrimination and violence while studying or working outside their home states. The incident also underscores the need for effective inter-state cooperation in investigating and prosecuting such cases.

Reflections and Looking Forward

As the investigation into Anjel Chakma's murder continues, it is crucial that the authorities ensure that justice is served and that such incidents are prevented in the future. The North East region, with its rich cultural diversity, should be a place where all residents feel safe and valued. It is our collective responsibility to create a more inclusive and secure environment for everyone.
