Analysis: AMUCO and other CSOs urge immediate central action to prevent ethnic polarisation

Urgent Call for Peace: Civil Society Organizations in Manipur

Manipur's Ethnic Tensions: A Call for Central Intervention

In a joint statement, a coalition of civil society, youth, and women's organizations in Manipur has urged the Government of India to take immediate action to prevent escalating ethnic tensions in the state, which could potentially lead to instability. The coalition, comprising the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meirapaibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), Committee on Human Rights (COHR), All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), and the Manipuri Students Federation (MSF), has warned of the dangerous consequences of ethnic-polarising politics.

Ethnic Tensions and Political Manoeuvres

The statement highlights that recent unrest in Manipur has been exacerbated by attempts to exploit ethnic identities for political purposes, posing serious threats to public safety and the welfare of ordinary citizens. The coalition emphasizes that such practices must cease immediately and calls for dialogue, cooperation, and community welfare to guide all interventions.

The Need for Central Government Action

The organizations demand that New Delhi take decisive and proactive steps to restore peace and maintain law and order, stressing that the responsibility for stabilizing the state primarily lies with the central government. They urge authorities to ensure that Central Forces act impartially and responsibly, avoiding actions that could escalate communal tensions.

Implications for the North East and India

The escalating ethnic tensions in Manipur are a cause for concern not only for the state but also for the broader North East region and India as a whole. Instability in one state can have ripple effects, affecting neighboring states and potentially leading to a domino effect. Therefore, it is crucial for the central government to take swift and decisive action to address the root causes of the unrest and prevent further escalation.

Looking Ahead: Prioritizing Peace and Unity

The coalition has warned that any delay or inaction could deepen divisions and trigger prolonged instability. They urge political leaders, civil society, and the public to prioritize peace, unity, and collaborative action to secure Manipur's social and political fabric. By addressing the underlying issues fueling ethnic tensions, the coalition hopes to foster a more harmonious and stable society in Manipur and the North East region as a whole.
