Coal-Fired Power Decline: A Significant Shift in India and China

In a landmark development, both India and China have witnessed a decline in coal-fired power generation for the first time since the 1970s. This shift, driven by a rise in non-fossil energy sources, carries international implications, particularly for the North East region of India and the broader Indian context.

Renewable Energy on the Rise

According to a report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), electricity generated by coal plants fell by 1.6% in China and 3% in India in 2025. This decline was offset by a significant increase in solar, wind, and hydel power, with China adding 300GW of solar power and 100GW of wind power alone.

India, too, made strides in renewable energy, adding 35GW of solar capacity, 6GW of wind, and 3.5GW of hydropower in the first 11 months of the year. This growth in renewable energy capacity reduced the need for coal plants to operate at high levels, leading to a fall in coal output.

Implications for India and the North East

For India, particularly the North East region, this shift towards renewable energy could have several implications. Firstly, it presents an opportunity for increased energy security, as the country moves away from reliance on fossil fuels. Secondly, it could lead to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change.

Moreover, the decline in coal-fired power generation could have economic benefits. Reduced reliance on coal could lead to lower import costs and a decrease in pollution-related health issues, improving the overall quality of life.

Challenges Ahead

However, the transition to renewable energy is not without its challenges. Extreme heat, for instance, can strain coal plants and solar generation, potentially leading to increased demand for fossil fuels during peak hours. Additionally, the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources necessitates the development of efficient energy storage solutions.

The decline in coal-fired power generation in India and China is a promising sign for the future of renewable energy. If sustained, this shift could lead to a peak in coal power in both countries. For India, meeting existing clean-energy targets could allow coal power to peak before 2030, even if electricity demand growth accelerates again.
