A New Era of Energy Supply in North East India
The installation of a natural gas pipeline connecting Tripura and Mizoram is underway, marking a significant step towards energy self-sufficiency in North East India. This development, expected to be completed by December 2027, will bring the region one step closer to a more sustainable and affordable energy future.
The Pipeline Project: A Closer Look
The 119.5-kilometer pipeline, part of the North East Natural Gas Pipeline Grid, originates from the Panisagar receiving terminal in Tripura. It passes through several towns and villages before reaching near Mamit in Mizoram. From there, it will move towards Lengte and terminate at the proposed Sihhmui receiving terminal, about 21 kilometers from Aizawl.
Key Stages and Progress
- From the Sihhmui receiving terminal, household gas connections within Aizawl city will be undertaken by Tripura Natural Gas Corporation Limited (TNGCL).
- As of now, 45% of the project has been completed.
Implications for Mizoram and Beyond
Once completed, this pipeline will provide Mizoram with its first gas pipeline connection, particularly benefiting residents of Aizawl. The project will then be extended to other parts of the state in a phased manner. Beyond domestic consumption, the gas will also be used for commercial, industrial, transport, and other purposes.
