The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) has recently collaborated with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) in Taiwan and Ampak Technology Inc. to boost cooperation in the semiconductor sector. This collaboration encompasses joint research, academic exchange programs, and industry-academia partnerships in areas such as integrated circuit (IC) design, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced wireless technologies.

Academic Exchange and Joint Research Initiatives

The collaboration aims to provide students with hands-on exposure and encourage cross-disciplinary skill development. Discussions were held on possible areas of collaboration, including academic exchange programs, joint research initiatives, and industry-academia partnerships. These engagements are expected to support long-term cooperation between India and Taiwan.

The semiconductor sector is of significant importance, not just for its geographical and geopolitical implications, but also for the supply-chain resilience it offers. Professor Li-Chun Wang, from NYCU, emphasized the need for long-term cooperation, especially given geopolitical risks. This collaboration could potentially position Northeast India, and by extension, India, as a hub for semiconductor research and manufacturing.

Building Cross-Disciplinary Talent

Professor Li-Chun Wang highlighted the importance of practical exposure and interdisciplinary learning. He suggested that collaboration should focus on cross-disciplinary integration, exposing students not only to IC design but also to system-level and manufacturing challenges. This approach could help reduce design risks and improve outcomes.

Reflections and Future Plans

Professor Bhaskar Datta, Dean of Academics at IIT Gandhinagar, expressed enthusiasm about the forthcoming joint academic programs with NYCU Taiwan. These programs are expected to benefit undergraduate and postgraduate students at IIT Gandhinagar. The collaboration could serve as a global model for strong academic collaboration, paving the way for the next generation of semiconductor researchers and engineers.
