Analysis: Lahore meeting clears new ISI plan: Drugs, guns and Khalistan movement revival via Punjab

Pakistan's New Strategy: Drugs, Guns, and Khalistan Movement Revival via Punjab

A New Threat to India's North East: Pakistan's Revival of the Khalistan Movement

Recent intelligence reports suggest a concerning development: Pakistan-based actors are planning to flood Punjab with drugs, arms, and ammunition as part of a revived Khalistan movement. This strategy, if successful, could have significant implications for the North East region of India and the broader Indian context.

The Khalistan Movement and Punjab

The Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) is set to lead this operation, aiming to lure Punjab's youth with drugs and money due to the failure of ideological appeals. However, intelligence agencies have noted that the youth in Punjab are generally unresponsive to the idea of a separate Khalistan nation, largely due to the influence of elder community members who speak against such movements.

The International Front

While the Khalistan movement appears to be struggling within Punjab, its international campaigns have seen some success. Terror groups like the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) have conducted referendums and spread hate against India through social media. These international players are now questioning the ISI's inaction in scaling up operations in India, as they need Pakistan's support to do so.

The Role of Jammu and Kashmir

The ISI's strategy also includes Jammu and Kashmir, where high security along the Line of Control has made it difficult for them to smuggle drugs, arms, and ammunition. To overcome this, the ISI is planning to send large consignments into Punjab first and then move them into Jammu and Kashmir by road.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

If successful, this strategy could pose a significant threat to the security situation in the North East region, given the porous borders and the history of insurgency. Moreover, the revival of the Khalistan movement could have wider implications for India's national security, given the potential for increased militant activity and cross-border terrorism.

Looking Forward

As India continues to grapple with complex security challenges, it is crucial for the government to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing these threats. This includes strengthening border security, enhancing intelligence-sharing mechanisms, and working closely with regional allies to counter the activities of Pakistan-based actors.
