Nagaland Proposes Naga Common Platform for Unified Voice on Political Issue
In a significant move aimed at resolving the long-standing Nagaland political issue, the Nagaland government has proposed the creation of a Naga Common Platform. This initiative aims to unite civil society groups and present a unified position.
Uniting the Naga Communities
The idea of a unified platform was discussed during a meeting of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) on Saturday. Deputy Chief Minister and PAC Co-Convenor T R Zeliang highlighted the need for an overarching body to represent the collective views of Naga communities.
Zeliang emphasized that the presence of multiple organizations expressing differing opinions has weakened the community's bargaining strength. He urged tribal hohos, the apex tribal authorities, to encourage political groups to unite under a single framework.
Bridging Internal Divisions
The focus for the coming months, according to Zeliang, is to bridge internal divisions within civil society, ensuring that all groups can speak with a consistent voice during political negotiations.
Zeliang stressed that while elected representatives act under the Constitution of India, a coordinated civil society approach is essential for effective dialogue.

The resolution of the Naga peace process has implications not only for Nagaland but also for the broader Northeast region and India as a whole. A successful resolution could pave the way for similar dialogues in other conflict-ridden regions.
A Long and Complex History
The Naga peace process has a long history. A significant milestone came on August 3, 2015, when the NSCN(IM) and the Indian government signed the Framework Agreement. However, a final settlement remains pending due to disagreements over demands for a separate Naga flag and constitution.

Although the meeting did not result in a formal resolution, Zeliang described the discussions as extensive and aimed at resolving the ongoing political stalemate. The Naga Common Platform, if successful, could provide a path towards a sustainable and peaceful solution.
