Mizoram's Power Push: A Step Towards Self-Sufficiency
Mizoram, a picturesque state in North East India, is making significant strides in the power sector. The recent launch of the 24-MW Tuirini hydro project is a testament to the government's commitment to becoming self-sufficient in power.
Government Initiatives
Mizoram Chief Minister, Lalduhoma, stated that the Tuirini small hydro power project is part of the government's initiative to ensure energy independence. He also mentioned the inauguration of a 10 MW solar power plant in December 2025 and the construction of another 5 MW solar power plant. The government is also planning two more electric power projects, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 132 MW Tuivai hydro electric project already completed.
Expansion of Renewable Energy
To enhance solar power generation, an Expression of Interest (EOI) has been issued to private developers for setting up solar plants across the state. As of now, 791 rooftop solar installations have been completed, with a combined installed capacity of about 2.62 MW. Additionally, a pump storage project is being planned at Tuichang river, close to the Vankal solar park in Khawzawl district.
Power Trading and Financial Gains
Mizoram has long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with central generating stations. The state government has generated a total revenue of Rs 172 crore from power trading with a net profit of Rs 87.21 crore. During periods when the state is unable to fully utilize its allocated quota, surplus power is available for trading, providing additional financial gains.
Implications for North East and India
Mizoram's efforts towards energy self-sufficiency can serve as a model for other North Eastern states and India as a whole. By harnessing renewable energy sources and improving power infrastructure, states can reduce their dependence on central power sources, ensuring energy security and promoting sustainable development.
