Pineapple Push in Arunachal Pradesh: A Step Towards Global Markets
In a bid to boost agricultural exports and rural development, Arunachal Pradesh's West Siang district is focusing on pineapple cultivation. The three-day Arunachal Pineapple Festival Bagra 3.0 recently concluded, with MLA Topin Ete urging farmers to focus on quality and scientific methods to tap into global markets.
Quality Control and Scientific Cultivation
MLA Ete emphasized the importance of price and quality control as there is fierce competition in international markets. He urged farmers to adopt scientific methods of cultivation to grow superior quality pineapples that can stand out in the global market.
Export Opportunities and Regional Growth
The MLA highlighted that pineapples from the region are already being exported to countries like Singapore and Saudi Arabia. This not only presents an opportunity for farmers to earn better incomes but also contributes to the regional economy. The success of pineapple cultivation in West Siang could potentially inspire similar initiatives in other parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Northeast India.
Government Support and Infrastructure Development
In response to a proposal by the All Bagra Welfare Society, MLA Ete promised to look into the construction of an RCC bridge over the Sipu river and the provision of permanent electrification at the festival spot in the next financial year. Such infrastructure developments can further facilitate pineapple cultivation and the movement of produce.
Reviving Pineapple Cultivation
The ZPC Nyali Bagra mentioned that the fruit processing factory in Nyigmoyi had gone defunct, discouraging local farmers. However, the pineapple festival has revived interest in pineapple cultivation, with more farmers now taking up the crop. This increase in cultivation can lead to a more sustainable pineapple industry in the region.
Acknowledgment and Future Prospects
The winner of the fruit exhibition competition was awarded with new agricultural implements by the ICAR Arunachal Pradesh Centre, Basar. The event was also attended by Tirap DC Liyi Bagra, Bagra Circle Officer Jumi Ete, and newly elected ZPMs of West Siang district.
