Delays in Bridge Construction on Itanagar-Jote Road Cause Concern
A significant concern has arisen in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, as the All Papum Poma Students Union (APPSU) has highlighted delays in the tendering process for the construction of six bridges on the Itanagar-Jote road.
Sanctioned but Not Started: The Delayed Projects
The state government sanctioned these six bridges in December 2024, with a total cost of Rs 80.5 crore. The Arunachal Administrative and Engineering Services (AA&ES) was accorded in March 2025. However, despite the passage of twelve months, the tendering process for the project has yet to be initiated.
A Crucial Communication Network at Risk
The Itanagar-Jote road is a notified state highway, serving as a critical and vital communication network for the region. It connects essential institutions such as the National Institute of Technology Jote, Jarbom Gamlin Law College, and the Film & Television Institute, as well as numerous villages.
Questionable Construction Practices
The APPSU has also raised concerns about the construction of two bridges, at Dokoso Nallah and Gerah Nallah, which they claim were built without adhering to due procedures and guidelines. This alleged violation of state government guidelines and directives, which mandate tendering for projects above Rs 50 lakhs and e-tendering for projects above Rs 1 crore, has sparked further concern.
Call for Action and Transparency
The APPSU has demanded a clarification from the chief secretary regarding the inordinate delay in the initiation of the tendering process and the construction of the two bridges at Dokoso and Gerah Nallah. They have also demanded that an open and competitive tendering process be initiated within seven days, ensuring fairness, transparency, and compliance with rules and guidelines.
