Analysis: Doctors at Tripura Medical College perform surgery on rare fetus in fetu case

Rare Surgery in Tripura: A Milestone for Northeast India's Medical Sector

A Rare Success Story: Fetus in Fetu Surgery at Tripura Medical College

In a remarkable achievement for the medical fraternity in North East India, doctors at Tripura Medical College (TMC) have successfully performed a complex surgery on a seven-month-old infant diagnosed with a rare congenital condition known as Fetus in Fetu. This surgery marks a significant milestone in the region's medical history.

Understanding the Rare Condition

Fetus in Fetu is an extremely rare developmental anomaly, where a malformed, non-viable parasitic twin is found enclosed within the body of its normally developing twin. Only around 200 such cases have been reported worldwide.

The Journey Towards Recovery

The surgery was conducted on January 13 by the paediatric surgery department of TMC. The infant, identified as Bishanka Das, is now stable and healthy and is expected to be discharged within the next two to three days.

  • The condition could not be identified during pre-operative investigations and was confirmed only after a pathological examination of the excised mass.
  • The baby had been suffering from recurrent urinary tract infections and was referred to TMC from IGM Hospital.
  • Ultrasonography and CT scans were carried out, which suggested a large tumour-like mass near the right kidney of the baby.

The Challenges and Solutions

The anomaly is estimated to occur in approximately one in five lakh live births. Considering the age of the patient, the procedure was highly critical, and it was conducted after detailed counselling of the parents regarding the risks involved.

The mass was carefully dissected and removed intact from the abdominal cavity, with special care taken to avoid damage to surrounding vital organs.

Implications for Northeast India and Beyond

The successful outcome of this surgery highlights the growing capacity of the state's medical institutions to handle rare and complex medical cases effectively. This achievement underscores the importance of strengthening public awareness so that patients seek advanced treatment within the state, as emphasized by OSD of Tripura Medical College Society, Dr Nandan Sarkar.

Looking Forward

As the medical field continues to evolve, so does the capability of medical institutions like TMC. The successful Fetus in Fetu surgery serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of the medical team and the potential for advancements in the region's medical sector.
