Analysis: Mizoram: CM lays foundation for 24 MW Turini hydropower project

Mizoram's Green Leap Towards Energy Independence

Mizoram's Green Leap Towards Energy Independence

Mizoram, a picturesque state nestled in the heart of North East India, has embarked on an ambitious journey towards energy self-sufficiency. On Monday, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma marked a significant milestone in this journey with the laying of the foundation stone for the Rs 676.98 crore Tuirini small hydropower project.

Strengthening the State's Energy Backbone

The 24-megawatt (MW) Tuirini project, funded by the New Development Bank, is expected to bolster Mizoram's energy infrastructure. The project will be implemented as an Externally Aided Project, with the Central Government contributing 80% of the total cost, and the Mizoram Government providing the remaining 20%.

A Broader Initiative

In his address, Lalduhoma described the Tuirini project as a milestone for Mizoram, highlighting its role in his government's broader initiative to make the state power self-sufficient. He cited the recent inauguration of a 10 MW solar power plant at Thenzawl and the construction of a 5 MW solar power plant at Sumsuih, both fully owned by the state government, as evidence of this progress.

Expanding Renewable Energy Sources

Recognizing the potential of renewable energy, the Mizoram Government is also intensifying efforts to reduce dependence on external power sources. Lalduhoma revealed plans for a pumped storage project on the Tuichang river and issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) to private developers for setting up solar power plants at five locations across the state.

The North East Connection

The push towards renewable energy and energy self-sufficiency resonates across the North East region, where states grapple with power shortages and high dependency on external sources. Mizoram's success in this area could serve as a model for other states in the region, fostering a more sustainable and resilient energy landscape.

Looking Ahead

The Tuirini small hydropower project is scheduled to be completed within five years. With the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 132 MW Tuivai hydroelectric project already completed, and the DPR for the proposed Tlawng hydropower project expected by September this year, Mizoram appears poised to continue its green journey towards energy independence.

As Mizoram treads this path, it not only secures a brighter, more sustainable future for its citizens but also contributes to India's larger goals of energy security and reduced carbon emissions.
