India's Life-Saving Cancer Medicines Delivery to Afghanistan
In a significant humanitarian move, India dispatched 7.5 tonnes of life-saving cancer medicines to Kabul, Afghanistan, addressing the urgent needs of cancer patients in the war-torn country. This act of kindness was a testament to India's commitment to supporting its neighbors, particularly in the healthcare sector.
Boosting Health Cooperation and Sharing Expertise
The delivery of cancer medicines was a follow-up to the discussions held in December 2025 between Afghanistan's Minister of Public Health, Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali, and India's Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, in New Delhi. The talks focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, sharing expertise between medical professionals, building the capacity of Afghan health workers, and ensuring the supply of quality medicines to Afghanistan.
Support for Health Facilities and Medical Visas
During the discussions, the need for cancer treatment, medical visas for Afghan patients, and support for health facilities were also highlighted. In response, India pledged to send a CT scan machine, along with medicines and vaccines, to a children's hospital in Kabul. The government also expressed its readiness to ease access to medical treatment for Afghan patients and extend further assistance.
Traditional Medicine Cooperation and Research Centers
Beyond conventional medicine, discussions also centered around traditional medicine. Afghanistan's Minister of Public Health, Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali, met India's Minister for AYUSH (Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy), Prataprao Jadhav. The two sides discussed setting up a traditional medicine institute and research center in Kabul, training practitioners, and signing a bilateral cooperation agreement.
Implications for North East India and Beyond
This humanitarian aid from India to Afghanistan underscores the importance of regional cooperation, particularly in the healthcare sector. For North East India, this act of kindness serves as a reminder of India's commitment to its neighbors and the broader Indian subcontinent. It also highlights the potential for further collaboration and cooperation in healthcare, particularly in the realm of traditional medicine, which holds significant cultural and therapeutic value in the region.
Looking Forward: Strengthening Bilateral Healthcare Ties
As India and Afghanistan continue to strengthen their bilateral healthcare ties, the focus will be on long-term supply of medicines, enhancing cooperation in traditional medicine, and developing research centers. This collaboration not only benefits the people of Afghanistan but also reinforces the spirit of regional cooperation, a vital aspect for peace and prosperity in South Asia.
