In a significant stride towards rural development, the Fisheries Department of Mizoram recently emphasized the expanding role of fish farming in sustaining livelihoods. During the department's rededication ceremony, it was revealed that over 22,000 farmers across the state are currently earning their living through fish farming, with fish ponds spanning approximately 6,000 hectares.

The department reported a total fish production of 7,177 metric tonnes during 2024-2025, indicating the sector's growing contribution to income generation and food security in Mizoram. Fisheries Minister Lalthansanga, who graced the event as the Chief Guest, expressed satisfaction with the department's progress and urged staff to adopt modern technology, continuously upgrade their skills, and work with integrity and dedication. Director of Fisheries Zonuntluangi traced the evolution of the department in Mizoram, noting that it functioned as a wing under the Agriculture Department during the Union Territory period before becoming a full-fledged department in 1993. She informed that District Fisheries Development Offices are now operational in every district and submitted a report on departmental activities at both the Directorate and district levels.
