India's Ambitious Bid for Global Athletics Events

India's Pursuit of Global Athletics Events: A Stepping Stone for Sports Development

India's sports landscape is set for a significant boost as the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has put forward bids for two major global athletics events in 2028 the World Indoor Championships in Bhubaneswar and the World U-20 Championships in Ahmedabad.

Bidding for the World Indoor Championships

The AFI's bid for the World Indoor Championships in Bhubaneswar comes after a two-member team from World Athletics inspected the state-of-the-art indoor facility at the Kalinga Stadium Complex. The World Athletics Vice-President and former AFI chief, Adille Sumariwalla, was present during the visit.

Competitive Bidding Process

The World Athletics will announce the hosts of the 2028 and 2030 editions of Junior World Championships in March, and the host city for the World Indoor Championships is also likely to be announced in the same month. New Zealand has also expressed interest in hosting the 2028 World Indoor Championships.

Bidding for the World U-20 Championships

Ahmedabad, which will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, is also bidding to host the 2031 World (Senior) Athletics Championships and the 2036 Olympics. The city has already made a bid for the 2028 World U-20 Championships.

Relevance to North East India and India at Large

The bid for the World Indoor Championships in Bhubaneswar, located in Odisha, showcases the city's commitment to sports infrastructure development. This could potentially attract more international events to the region, boosting tourism and sports culture.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Indian Athletics

The ambitious bids by the AFI demonstrate India's growing interest in hosting global athletics events. Securing these events would not only enhance India's reputation as a sports hub but also provide a platform for the country's young athletes to showcase their talent on the international stage.
