A Significant Milestone in Assam's Energy Sector
In a groundbreaking achievement, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has successfully completed one of the world's longest Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) pipeline crossings under the Brahmaputra river in Jorhat, Assam. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the Paradip-Numaligarh crude oil pipeline project.
Overcoming Challenging Conditions
The 4,058-meter pipeline crossing, part of the 1,635-km crude oil pipeline connecting Paradip, Odisha, to Numaligarh, Assam, has passed through five states and numerous rivers and water bodies. The crossing under the Brahmaputra river, from Afalamukh (Majuli) to Nimatighat (Jorhat), presented complex planning and high precision requirements due to challenging conditions.
A Testament to Advanced Technology and Precision Engineering
After the initial contractor failed to complete the task, the work was reassigned to M/s Trenchless Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd. The successful completion of the critical crossing within one year underscores the importance of advanced technology and precision engineering in such complex projects.
Implications for the North East Region and India
The successful completion of this pipeline crossing has far-reaching implications for the energy sector in the North East region and India as a whole. With the refinery's capacity enhanced from 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to 9 MMTPA, the project will ensure a steady supply of crude oil to NRL. This will not only boost the refinery's production but also stimulate economic growth in the region.
Looking Forward
As of now, out of the total length of the pipeline, a length of 1,460 km has been laid. The pipeline has undergone 38 river crossings, will pass through 10 tunnels (eight of which have been completed), and has passed through 90 water bodies and several roads, including highways. The successful completion of this project will undoubtedly pave the way for similar infrastructure developments in the North East region and India.
