Scientists have recently discovered a new species of flowering plant, Strobilanthes riteshii, in Arunachal Pradesh, a northeastern state of India. This rare find underscores the rich biodiversity of the eastern Himalayas and the growing conservation concerns in the region.
Discovery and Naming
The newly described species was discovered during botanical surveys near Chayangtajo village in East Kameng district, at an elevation of approximately 1,600 metres. The plant has been named after Dr Ritesh Kumar Choudhary, a renowned plant taxonomist from the Agharkar Research Institute, in recognition of his contributions to plant taxonomy and molecular systematics.

Strobilanthes riteshii belongs to the genus Strobilanthes, known for its striking flowers and mass-flowering cycles. The newly discovered species is distinct from other Strobilanthes species due to its unique growth habit, leaf structure, and floral features. Despite its resemblance to Strobilanthes gigantea, a species described from Arunachal Pradesh recently, a detailed morphological study revealed consistent differences.

Arunachal Pradesh alone is now home to at least 44 species, several of which have been described only in recent years.
